EUROPEANS across the continent celebrated the EU enlargement on May 1 that boosted the union from 15 to 25 members.
A special flag-raising ceremony and an official welcome to the new members took place in Dublin, Ireland.
Celebrations in Slovakia saw thousands of people cheering about the entry. According to the Slovak daily SME the celebrations were reminiscent of a New Year's party with fireworks and various festivities.
Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrušovský said that entering the EU was the fulfilment of a dream for Slovakia. He said, however, that the country has to continue to address its problems such as corruption.
