A ROMA family that included a two-year old child died in a fire in the Roma settlement of Huncovce in the eastern Slovak Kežmarok district on January 4, the daily SME wrote.

The police have started investigating the fatal fire, which is thought to have been caused by flammable material placed near a stove in one of the Roma cottages.

The neighbours said they had heard an explosion before the fire started and that they had tried to stop the blaze. But the only source for water was a functioning water tap at a nearby house, as the creek was frozen.

Some locals suggested to the police that the cottage could have been set on fire on purpose, for reasons of revenge.
