The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) announced a threat of flooding in the western-Slovak region of Záhorie and on the Danube and lower Bodrog Rivers due to thawing snow, the TASR newswire reported on January 17.
The institute issued a 2nd grade warning for the Danube River, the middle level, and issued a 1st level, the mildest for the Záhorie and Bodrog rivers. SHMÚ also said that flooding in Záhorie and on the Danube can be caused by rain as well as melting snow.
The warning for the Danube is valid till noon on Monday in Záhorie until Tuesday, January 18 till 18:00 and for the Bodrog until it is rescinded.
Weather forecasters expect a steep increase in the river level of the lower part of the Slovak section of the Danube and they expect that higher degrees of flood emergency will be reached as there is more water flowing in from the Austrian part of the river.
On the Morava River in Záhorie they expect a big increase in water levels due to snow thawing and heavy rainfall in the Czech part of the Morava River basin, TASR wrote. Based on the existing snowpack in the basins and the current warm spell, hydrometeorology experts envisage a further increase in water levels in the lower Bodrog region, saying the water level there can reach – and maybe exceed – levels equalling the stages of flood emergency.
