A total of 34 Slovaks, eight Czechs, one Hungarian and two Portuguese, all of whom had been living and working in Egypt, were brought to Slovakia by an aircraft specially arranged by the Slovak government on Thursday, February 3, the TASR newswire reported. The evacuation was organised following several days of violent anti-government protests affecting cities in Egypt.
The aeroplane landed at Bratislava Airport shortly after 17:30. The decision to dispatch it had been announced by Foreign Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda on Wednesday. It landed in Cairo on Thursday morning, and then flew to Hurghada, a tourist destination.
Speaking after a government session on Wednesday, Dzurinda noted that there were around 100 Slovak citizens living long-term in Egypt.
