SLOVAKIA remains an important and highly reliable partner for Germany, said the president of Germany’s lower house of parliament, Norbert Lammert, after meeting with his Slovak counterpart, Pavol Paška, on March 3.
Lammert also praised the fact that even though the two countries have not always agreed on certain issues, they have always found joint solutions, and it has always been possible to count on Slovakia to deliver on its promises, as reported by the TASR newswire.
“Germany has been a strategic partner of Slovakia, and our relations are an absolute priority within the EU,” said Paška, as quoted by TASR.
The two politicians discussed bilateral relations, cooperation at the level of parliamentary committees and opportunities for further integration. They also talked about the European Parliamentary elections that will take place in May, regarding the possible risks with respect to the growth in euro-scepticism and radical attitudes toward European issues.
Lammert also discussed the situation in Ukraine with representatives of civil society. He said that he was especially moved by how older people view the situation in Ukraine, and especially in Crimea, and by how they draw parallels to the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. According to him, while not every detail is comparable, it is obviously no coincidence that people see the situation in Crimea in this light.
We need to take a lesson from history and the situation that was seen here [in 1968], and to prevent such a scenario from occurring, said Lammert, as reported by TASR.
