Slovakia will step up its development aid to poorer countries, according to the country’s new official strategy for development aid for 2009-13, which was approved by the government on Wednesday, March 4.
In 2005, Slovakia along with other European Union newcomers, undertook to increase the amount it spends on development aid from well below 0.1 percent of gross national product (GNP) to 0.17 percent by 2010 and 0.33 percent in 2015, the TASR newswire wrote.
In order to conform to this goal, Slovakia would have to earmark €130.477 million (Sk3.92 billion) for 2010, which is over €80 million more than provided for in the current budget plans. The approved strategy, which sets out plans to provide development aid to 19 countries including Afghanistan, Kenya, Serbia, Albania and Belarus, replaces the previous one for 2003-08. TASR
