DESPITE facing trouble abroad, the ruling Smer and its coalition partners are successful at home.

A survey conducted by the MVK polling agency showed that 40.7 percent of Slovaks were satisfied with the government’s first 100 days in office.

In comparison, after the first 100 days of the previous Mikuláš Dzurinda government, only 12.9 percent of respondents considered it as successful, the Hospodárske noviny wrote.

Sociologist Pavel Haulík of MVK ascribed the government’s success, among other reasons, to the fact that it has communicated well with the public.

“Already before the elections people suggested that they did not want to change reforms dramatically, merely to make them more digestible. That’s what Fico is doing now,” Haulík said.

He noted, however, that only the future will show whether the government is really able to resolve the country’s existing problems.
