Part of the money that would have been used on the preparations for the Slovak part of the Winter Olympic Games in 2022, the bid for which has now been dropped, will be spent on the 27th Winter Universiade sports and cultural event for students in Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatra mountains and Osrblie in January 2015, the government decided on October 1.

Slovakia is co-organising the 2015 Winter Universiade with the Spanish city of Granada, the TASR newswire wrote.

The government has allocated €233,000 and €171,000 for the university Olympic-style games that should have been spent on preparations for the Winter Olympics in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The Polish city of Krakow which presented the 2022 Winter Olympics bid in co-operation with Zakopane, Poland, and the Slovak ski resort of Jasná in the Low Tatra mountains, withdrew its candidacy following a referendum in May in which the move was rejected by almost 70 percent of the city’s inhabitants.
