Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin has been obliged to issue new salary instructions whereby all judges at the court will have their monthly salaries cut by €325 as of January, court spokesman Michal Jurči told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, February 2.
Judges’ salaries are to fall along with those of parliamentary deputies, following an amendment to the law linking the remuneration of some constitutional officials to the size of Slovakia’s budget deficit, the SITA newswire wrote. The budget deficit is currently well over the country’s 3-percent target and some officials’ salaries are therefore being cut.
“I respect the law, though this manner of tackling judges with salary cuts, as can be seen from the Constitutional Court’s rulings, is far beyond the boundaries of constitutionality,” said Harabin. “It can’t be ruled out that this incorrect legislative approach, which wasn’t caused by the judges themselves, will only trigger another wave of pointless legal disputes,” he added.
