AN MVK agency survey released January 28 showed that if parliamentary elections were held in January, the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) would win with 28.9 per cent voter support.
The survey ranked the non-parliamentary Smer party second with 16.3 per cent, followed by the governmental Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) with 11.2 per cent.
The ruling Slovak Christian and Democratic Coalition (SDKÚ) scored 7.6 per cent, non-parliamentary Ano 7.3 per cent, the government Christian Democrats 7.2 and the Slovak National Party 5.3.
After taking over 60 per cent in 1998 elections, the five parties of the ruling coalition have seen their support fall to 34 per cent, with two parties - the leftist SDĽ and SOP - unlikely to win enough votes to secure seats in parliament in scheduled September 2002 elections.
