Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic on Friday, August 6, praised the Bratislava Police Corps for the way in which it handled the high-risk second leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round match between Slovan Bratislava and Red Star Belgrade on Thursday, according to a statement that Lucia Garajová from the ministry's press department provided to TASR the next day.
“The police are supposed to ensure security, order and protect decent people. I'm proud of them,” said Lipšic as quoted by the TASR newswire. More than one thousand of the Serbian team’s fans came to Bratislava to attend the match, with Slovak police drawing up a set of stringent security measures.
Apart from one pre-match incident, however, no large-scale rioting among the fans of either the home or away teams was reported during or after the match. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but thanks to a 1-0 away win in the first leg, Slovan Bratislava made it to the next stage of the competition.
