THE TURNOUT in Slovakia's historic first elections to the European Parliament, to be held on June 13, may be very low, observers have warned.
According to the Slovak daily SME, several observers fear that the turnout could even be under 40 percent.
An opinion poll carried out in February, meanwhile, suggested that only 31.6 percent of people planned to participate in the election.
Slovakia will have 14 representatives in the EP. These will be picked from candidates put forth by parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties.
Azelio Fulmini, head of the EP's information office in Bratislava, told SME that the average turnout for the elections in the EU15 has been 10 percent under that of national elections in the individual states.
He also said that his office would join the campaign in Slovakia with various posters, billboards, and TV spots encouraging people to participate in the elections.
