THE EDUCATION Ministry is preparing criteria according to which some high schools may obtain the title of "elite schools".

“These will be high schools of an international nature,” Education Minister Jan Mikolaj told the SITA newswire.

The title will signify that the schools fulfil certain internationally recognised criteria, Mikolaj said, but it will have no administrative effect on, for example, provision of subsidies.

The original plan was for each of Slovakia’s regions to have one elite school, but Mikolaj changed that plan.

“We will not pre-determine the number of elite high schools because of a proposal to have one in each county. I cannot imagine that,” he said.

Mikolaj commented that high schools where foreign languages are taught at the level of the final state exams, or as part of an international agreement, will qualify for the title.
