FOREIGN Minister Eduard Kukan said that Slovak parliament would approve a proposed EU constitution without holding a referendum, as has been proposed in some states.
Kukan told the private news agency SITA that a majority of political parties in Slovakia did not support the idea of a referendum, including his party, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union.
The future Slovak president, Ivan Gašparovič, who will take his post on June 15, said he was prepared to announce the referendum if Slovak citizens and political parties demanded it. In his opinion, however, the referendum is not a good idea.
EU leaders want to reach an agreement on the constitution by the end of the Irish presidency in June.
