SLOVAKIA will soon have an updated strategy that sets out the objectives and procedures for decommissioning nuclear facilities and handling spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, the SITA newswire reported.
The strategy also defines how funds necessary for financing the historic deficit are to be collected, which is currently set at €2.1 billion. This historic deficit was incurred prior to 2006, when Slovakia lacked a clear concept of the so-called ‘back end’ of the nuclear energy cycle, which involves the processing of used nuclear fuel, and failed to accumulate enough funds to support these activities.
The National Nuclear Fund (NJF) has updated the strategy for the ‘back end’ of the nuclear energy cycle, and in particular, the economic and technical aspect of the strategy.
The technical aspect of the strategy was rewritten due to changes in the strategic decisions of the implementation of individual activities in the final stage of the so-called peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Nuclear and Decommissioning Company of Slovakia (JAVYS). For example, JAVYS has changed the timing of certain activities related to the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, as well as their scope, sequence and the location of some facilities.
“An objective cause is the intention to build a new nuclear power plant on the site of Jaslovské Bohunice,” says the strategy, as quoted by SITA.
