The police have uncovered a ring of people suspected of tax evasion in a scheme that involved bogus value added tax (VAT) deductions, Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic announced on Tuesday, November 1, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Submitting fraudulent tax forms, the group of 17 people, including the former head of an unnamed tax office, is believed to have illegally reaped €9 million. Another €17 million was intercepted thanks to the police operation, said Lipšic.
The three ringleaders of the group were detained following a police raid that took place on Sunday, Lipšic added. "We didn't stop at some naive 'fall guys' ... we're cracking down on the ringleaders of criminal groups," he stated.
