The results of a recent opinion poll suggest that Smer, the largest of the governing coalition parties, would have won the most seats in parliament had an election been held in February.
The poll indicated that six parties would have cleared the five-percent hurdle required to get MPs elected to parliament, the SITA newswire wrote. Smer polled 43-percent support in the survey, conducted by the MVK agency between February 20 and 27 on a representative sample of 1,100 respondents. The opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) received the second highest support, on 15.4 percent. Third was the Slovak National Party (SNS), with 10.4 percent of the vote.
Respondents were asked to say whom they would have voted for if parliamentary elections had been held the following weekend. The opposition Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) received 8.3 percent, followed by the opposition Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH), with 8.2 percent of votes. The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), with 6.1 percent support, was the only other party to get more than 5-percent support.
Of those polled, 6.4 percent said they would definitely not take part in elections and 19.4 percent were undecided. The results indicate Smer would have received 71 seats in parliament, the SDKÚ 25, the SNS 17, the SMK 14, the KDH 13 and HZDS 10. SITA
