THE MAJORITY of Slovaks support the cancellation of amnesties given in 1998 by former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) to all suspects in the 1995 abduction of the former president's son, Michal Kováč Jr.

In a survey carried out by the Median agency, 62.4 per cent of respondents said that the amnesties should be cancelled to enable proper investigation of the case in which Ivan Lexa, a HZDS member of parliament and former chief of the country's secret service (SIS) is allegedly involved.

While 23.8 per cent opposed cancelling the amnesties, 14 per cent said they had no opinion on the question.

The survey was carried out at the beginning of August on a representative sample of 1,743 respondents.
