An unexpected gift is awaiting PM Robert Fico when he returns from a Thursday summit in Brussels to his Bratislava office: fragments from Russian missiles.

Activists from the Mier Ukrajine (Peace to Ukraine) initiative left them for the premier to remind him that the war in Ukraine, and in its capital Kyiv, isn’t over. Shortly before last week’s meeting with Ukrainian PM Denys Shmyhal in western Ukraine, Fico said that life in Kyiv had been absolutely normal.

“You really think that there’s a war in Kyiv? You’re not being serious, I hope. Life is absolutely normal there,” he said at a press conference.

The initiative stated on Thursday that a Russian rocket had destroyed a sports centre in Kyiv after Fico made his infamous statement.

“We already stood on the wrong side of history with Hitler’s Germany, we should not repeat this mistake today,” said one of the women from the initiative.

In addition to the fragments, the initiative played the sound of air-raid alerts and of Russian missiles destroying Ukraine outside Fico’s office.

“If Fico has any remnants of humanity in him, he will listen to our message today,” former MP Viera Dubačová told the press.

Fico spent Thursday at a summit in Brussels where EU leaders, including the Slovak PM, approved a €50 billion financial programme for Ukraine. Last week, he also signed a cooperation statement with Shmyhal.
