The leaders of the governing parties agreed at a meeting of the Coalition Council on Tuesday, January 11, to unify Slovakia’s various election laws. This would mean that identical deadlines and supervision mechanisms – such as spending controls and moratoriums – will come into effect for all five types of elections.
“There will be no financial limits for political parties during campaigning, but instead strict audits on how much money was spent and how. We’ve also reached agreement on an identical moratorium for all elections and the cancellation of the subsidy [to political parties] that goes along with an MP’s mandate,” Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) said, as reported by the TASR newswire. Currently, the subsidy is paid to those political parties that manage to get into parliament. According to the law, parties are entitled to get financial subsidies for each MP they get.
The coalition also wants to establish a permanent central election committee and make vote-buying a crime. Introduction of online voting via the internet, an item featured in the election programmes of all coalition parties, will be introduced via a separate law.
