THE SLOVAK Rectors’ Conference has announced its plan to request the outgoing rector of Trenčín University, Miroslav Mečár, to leave academia entirely and stop discrediting Slovakia's education sector, the SITA newswire reported on February 8.
Ján Bujňák, vice president of the Slovak Rectors’ Conference, told SITA that the conference will deliver their request at their upcoming session in Košice on March 19.
Bujňák said that rectors will request that Trenčín University gets its affairs in order and observe the nation’s laws, or otherwise it should not remain as part of the Slovak educational system. Bujňák added that unless it resolves its internal problems its very existence will be threatened.
Mečár will resign as rector on March 1 because of the alleged legal violations. Despite these allegations he was still elected dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Relations by its academic senate.
The Slovak Rectors' Conference has stated that the election was unlawful. The dean is appointed by the rector, which means that Mečár would sign his own letter of appointment.
