THE FLOODING of the rivers in eastern Slovakia's Prešov and Košice regions has calmed down as of August 2 and water levels have stopped rising.
According to the most up-to-date hydrometeorological reports, the situation is stable and the river levels are likely to subside or remain unchanged. The situation could only change if new local strong storms and heavy rainfalls were to occur, news wire TASR reported.
The flooding that struck many parts of eastern Slovakia over the last week was most severe in the Michalovce district around 40 km east of Košice city.
The Ondava river burst its banks on Saturday and by late evening on August 1 it had flooded the minor road between Oborín village and Sirničky bridge.
Meanwhile, as Oborin residents were piling up sandbags that Sunday night, the water level upstream was beginning to fall.
On August 2, the Ondava floodwater covered an area of 30 square kilometres and threatened to reach the villages of Markovce, Hradištská Molva, Petríkovce, Kačanov and Oborín.
In the Prešov region, north of the Košice region, the highest flood alerts remain in place even though the situation is now mostly under control.
Altogether, 175 villages in the Prešov region and around 50 municipalities in the Košice region were affected by the flooding but no major evacuations were necessary.
