The daily paper Sme claimed that President Rudolf Schuster “assured” Canadian PM Jean Chretien that if former Slovak PM Vladimír Mečiar won upcoming elections, he would not be given a mandate to form the government.
Schuster and Chretien met on June 5 during Schuster’s week-long official visit to Canada and the US. The Canadian leader said that if Mečiar were elected to government it would “complicate” Slovakia’s Nato entry bid.
Schuster later denied having made any promises regarding Mečiar. “Show me a president in the world who would say four months before elections whom he was going to authorise to form a government,” Schuster said.
