THE OPPOSITION Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party is proposing to convene a special parliamentary session over the current situation in Ukraine’s Crimea region. The arbitrary military occupation of the area of an independent state by another state is unacceptable in today’s civilised world, said party chairman Pavol Frešo.
“It is aggression,” Frešo said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that it is necessary to label things as they truly are.
The current situation in Ukraine needs a clear stance from Slovakia, Frešo said, adding that the government has not issued any official statement like this yet.
“Therefore, we decided to act as a political party which has always represented the values of freedom and democracy, which was not indifferent to events that occurred beyond our borders,” the SDKÚ said, as quoted by TASR.
The party proposes to adopt a resolution to express concern over the escalating tension in Ukraine. Through this document parliament would also ask Russia to withdraw its army from the occupied areas, end the escalation of tension and agree on a political solution to the situation, as reported by TASR.
The resolution would also recognise the current leaders of Ukraine as its legitimate representatives, call on the government to express a clear stance on the aggression of Russian armies and withdraw the Slovak ambassador to Russia.
