THE FIRST Slovak members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will not be paid €8,600 monthly, as had been expected.

Because the foreign ministers of current EU member states failed to reach an agreement on a unified salary for the MEPs, the new Slovak members will receive Sk36,000 (€885), the daily SME wrote.

Germany, France, and Austria are against paying the new MEPs by EU standards.

They say the EP deputies should receive as much as their colleagues in their national parliaments.

The critics also objected that, if they were paid €8,600, Slovak deputies to the EP would make four times more than the Slovak prime minister and 25 times more than the average Slovak citizen.
