THE SLOVAK mission to earthquake-stricken Haiti has been successfully accomplished, the TASR newswire reported.
The mission’s 18-member team of doctors and paramedics arrived back in Slovakia on January 31. Ján Culka, leader of the Gabčíkovo Central Emergency Service, told TASR that Slovakia - although a small country - sent a bigger assistance team to Haiti than certain other larger countries that had sent aid.
Culka noted that, among other things, the Slovak team provided the logistical support needed to build field hospitals.
“We also assisted in search and rescue operations to see if there was anyone still alive under the rubble,” he said.
The Slovak team flew to Haiti on January 22, with a few Slovak doctors making the trip even earlier. The massive 7-magnitude earthquake hit the Caribbean island on January 12, killing at least 150,000 people.
