Slovak parliament approves NATO membership

The majority of parliament voted yesterday in favour of Slovakia's membership in NATO, with only the Communist Party voting against.

Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda thanked the opposition for their support and touched briefly on Vladimír Mečiar's government's failure to join NATO in 1997.

Of the 136 MPs present, 124 voted in favour of NATO membership and one abstained.
