Slovakia closes its airspace

Slovakia eventually also decided to close its airspace due to the movement of Iceland's volcanic ash and dust.

The Transport Ministry and the air-transport authorities have confirmed that Slovakia’s airspace was closed as of 15:00 on April 16, news portal sme.sk reported. The airspace will be closed until Sunday night, April 18 or later.

Sme sk. quoted meteorologist Lukáš Braun as saying that the edge of the air cloud could reach Slovakia overnight.

Irish airline Rynair at the Bratislava airport suspended flights to and from Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark earlier in the day after the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation closed the west European airspace because of the ash spewing from the Eyjaffjallajokull volcano in Iceland.
