IN RESPONSE to the restrictions of some EU member states temporarily banning Slovak citizens from work after EU enlargement, Slovakia is considering similar measures.
The Slovak Labour Ministry has proposed that citizens of states banning Slovaks from work immediately after the May enlargement be prevented from working in Slovakia.
"In no case should Slovakia give up its right to take measures protecting its labour market equal to those that have been applied by the current member states against our citizens," reads the Labour Ministry's plan, cited by the Slovak daily SME.
Of the current 15 EU members, Slovaks will be allowed to work immediately after entry in Great Britain, Ireland, and Sweden, and with minor restrictions in Denmark and the Netherlands.
Other EU members have imposed transition periods for Slovaks ranging between two and seven years.
All 10 new members will allow workers from acceding states to find jobs in their countries without any restrictions.
