Due to the current civil unrest in Egypt, the Slovak government has organised a special aircraft to bring home Slovaks who have been living or working in Egypt for a long time, Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda told the TASR newswire on February 2. Dzurinda noted that there are around 100 such Slovak citizens in Egypt. The plane left Bratislava on Thursday, February 3, bound for Cairo and Hurghada, Slovak newswires reported.
By Wednesday morning the ministry had registered around 50 people who were interested in being transferred to Slovakia, and the number has since risen. Dzurinda expects that another hundred or so Slovaks will return from Egypt via travel agencies. Dzurinda didn’t rule out the possibility that tourists would also be able to board the plane if there are vacant seats. “We’re closely co-operating with our neighbours and with EU countries,” Dzurinda said, adding that some Slovaks may be allowed on board the flights of other countries, e.g. Austria’s, with the reverse arrangement also being applied.
