SLOVAKIA is planning to apply for a spot on the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2008-2011.

It will present its candidacy for the council at the upcoming 62nd United Nations General Assembly starting in New York on September 18, Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš announced at a press conference on August 27.

Kubiš said that Slovakia is already very active in the human rights field, the TASR newswire wrote.

"We are a country that could work actively in such a post," he said.

Kubiš said Slovakia has a natural mandate for such a post, as it has already come into close contact with human rights issues on the UN Security Council. Slovakia is currently a non-permanent member of the council for the 2006-2007 session.
