MAY 1 in Slovakia saw some people celebrating the country’s EU entry and others marking international Labour Day.
In Bratislava, the Slovak Cabinet Office was open to the public to celebrate Slovakia’s entry into the EU, exactly one year previously. About 400 people turned up to mark the occasion, the SME daily reported.
Top Slovak officials, including PM Mikuláš Dzurinda, welcomed the visitors.
At the same time, the workers' anthem, The International, sounded on Bratislava's SNP Square to mark international Labour Day.
Representatives of the labour unions and the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) made speeches criticizing the current right wing cabinet. The KSS organized protest meetings across the country. Few people attended these meetings, largely pensioners.
