A recent survey by the media research department of the Slovak Radio state channel has found that 50.8 per cent of respondents agreed with the statement that remarks from foreign diplomats on the makeup of Slovakia’s post-election government represent a “deep infringement on free competition between Slovak political parties”. 38 per cent of respondents disagreed, while 11 per cent had no opinion.
Particularly American diplomats have issued strong warnings this year about the possible consequences for Slovakia’s Nato entry bid if voters were to return former leader Vladimír Mečiar and his HZDS party to power in September elections.
