Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) leader Pál Csáky told the Hospodárske noviny daily that Slovak Hungarians who were expelled from Slovakia after the Second World War under the Beneš Decrees should be financially reimbursed.
Unlike the radical SMK deputy chairman, Miklóš Duray, Csáky was only talking about an apology so far. As an example of how the compensation could be handled, he mentioned establishing a fund similar to those for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust.
The SMK, however, can expect support neither from its partners, nor from the ruling coalition. The opposition SDKÚ leader Mikuláš Dzurinda said that the post-war arrangement is unchangeable.
Smer-SD deputy chairman Dušan Čaplovič claims that reimbursement for the decrees might start an avalanche of claims by other groups that feel they have been damaged.
