Trade unions are planning to hold a strike in Košice on Thursday, February 3, between 14:30 and 15:00 to express their disapproval of projected changes to the Labour Code that they claim will translate into worse conditions for both employees and unions, head of the KOVO trade union Emil Machyňa told the TASR newswire on Wednesday.
The planned 20-minute strike will begin at 14:30 p.m. and will involve a halt to city and regional bus transport, with drivers working for Košice’s city transport company (DPMK) and Eurobus joining the protest. “We’re staging these protests to point out to the government that citizens have rights, and that if the government is intent on changing the state of affairs it must consider the situation in which people find themselves,” said Machyňa. He called the public transport stoppage an effective and lawful manner of expressing discontent.
“Far be it from us to harm the interests of passengers, but we must do this in order to pinpoint what is wrong ... We’re hoping they’ll understand that it’s worth it and that we’re standing up for them as well,” he added.
The DPMK has urged its employees not to take part in the strike, which could limit the city’s transport and affect passengers, chair of the DPMK Board Igor Jutka said at a meeting with unionists on Thursday morning, as quoted by TASR. The DPMK would respect other, symbolic, forms of protest, like wearing ribbons, or using banners, he said.
