The number of Slovaks working in other EU member states has stabilised at between 230,000 and 240,000 persons since Slovakia joined the European Union five years ago, according to an estimate provided for the TASR newswire by Peter Zeman from the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Office (ÚPSVAR) on May 3.
According to the report, the highest number of Slovaks working in other EU countries was registered a year ago at around 250,000 persons, but around 20,000 persons have already returned home due to the economic crisis, mostly from the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Hungary.
Most of these Slovaks are employed in the Czech Republic (90,000), Great Britain (60,000), Ireland (40,000) and Hungary (15,000). According to UPSVAR's figures, about 30,000 Slovak employees commute to one of Slovakia's neighbouring EU countries on a daily or weekly basis, especially to Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic. TASR
