The Nation's Memory Institute (ÚPN) on Thursday, May 31, announced that it had published the names of communist secret service (ŠtB) officials and agents in eastern Slovakia, which was known as a bastion of hard-core communists after the Warsaw Pact invasion crushed liberalisation attempts in Czechoslovakia in 1968.
The TASR newswire quoted the ÚPN Managing Board director Ivan Petránsky as saying that officials from the ŠtB's Košice branch, apart from "combating external and internal enemies" also actively co-operated with the Soviet KGB. The ÚPN's long-term goal is to release the personnel structures of all territorial ŠtB units in Slovakia. This is expected to be accomplished by the end of 2013.
