Verheugen promises 2004 EU entry

European Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen has rejected rumours that the EU may not take on new members in 2004 as planned, saying the union “believes as strongly as ever” it will wrap up entry negotiations with 10 countries by the end of 2002.
