The 2020 election in Slovakia is expected to bring a change after two governments dominated by the Smer party of former prime minister Robert Fico, forced to step down in 2018 in the aftermath of the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová.

After the parliamentary elections, the Slovak political scene finds itself in a situation where practically nobody is able to form a government supported by a solid majority in the parliament without the votes of extremist parties. This is a result that few (if anyone) expected.

Investment stimuli handed out prior to elections
AT ITS final session just three days before the parliamentary elections, the Robert Fico cabinet approved a hefty package of investment stimuli for a handful of companies, some of which have vague and suspicious backgrounds.
Taking unused ballots from polling stations: €33 fine
A FINE of €33 can be imposed on people who take ballot papers that they do not use in the upcoming general election out of polling stations, the Interior Ministry informed on March 1.
New rule: Moratorium begins two days before election
THE ELECTION campaign ends 48 hours before the election; i.e. immediately after midnight, on Thursday March 3. This stems from new election legislation banning the broadcasting of political advertisements after this deadline.
SNS withdraws candidate over far-right extremism links
THE SLOVAK National Party (SNS) decided on March 2 to immediately remove its candidate Martin Patoprstý from its slate for the general election on March 5.
