News and features on living in Slovakia
Third time’s a charm
THE DUTCH company Yssel, which specialises in the production and processing of reinforcement steel, has already tried and failed twice to carry out a significant investment in eastern Slovakia. Now it plans to invest €30 million into a new plant for the production of concrete parts for the construction of buildings in the village of Obid, close to Štúrovo.

Judges should explain their work
IN THE Netherlands many judges are on Twitter or on Facebook, commenting on their work to make people understand what their job is, says Dutch Ambassador to Slovakia Richard Van Rijssen, who suggests that if judges in Slovakia started themselves to be transparent about what they do and openly explain judgments, that would help to improve the perception of the judiciary here a great deal.
Experimental lab opens
DESIGNERS, researchers, engineers, students or entrepreneurs have a new place where they can create and put the results of their work into practice relatively quickly. A new experimental space, FabLab Bratislava, was ceremonially opened at the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava on November 4 in the presence of Juraj Draxler, the State Secretary of the Education Ministry, French Ambassador Didier Lopinot, and other officials.
Learning history in the field
IT MAKES a difference whether history is learned from textbooks or by visiting actual places where the described historic events really took place. Slovak students and other visitors were able to experience the difference on October 27 and 28 while attending the commemoration of the 70th anniversary – organised by the French Embassy – of the Slovak National Uprising in Strečno. In this region, French partisans joined the Slovak revolt against the Nazi-satellite Slovak State.
Car industry keeps dominating
SLOVAKIA experienced the biggest interest on the part of French investors back in 2003 and 2004 when a French carmaker decided to launch a brand-new plant in Trnava and when Slovakia became a member of the European Union. During the following years, the number of French companies in Slovakia doubled. This increase was halted by the global economic financial crisis, and now stagnates at about 400. In spite of this, France is one of Slovakia's largest investors and trade partners.

French cars rolling out in Trnava
SLOVAKIA is home to three carmakers of which PSA Peugeot Citroën in Trnava is the second oldest. In early November, cyclist Peter Sagan, who is the ambassador of the Citroën car brand in Slovakia, symbolically marked the 400,000 Citroën C3 Picasso that rolled off Trnava’s production lines, the TASR newswire wrote.

France, Slovakia share anniversaries
FRENCH culture has had quite a long tradition in Slovakia, as has the French language and its accompanying lifestyle. But compared to previous years, when most of them were rather concentrated in and around Bratislava, they have been moving more outside the capital recently.
Diplomacy via culture, tourism, education
WITH nearly 19,000 students learning French in the Slovak school system, the French language is well represented in the country, notes French Ambassador Didier Lopinot who also suggests that some Slovaks are opting to study French in connection with their work, especially with Slovakia’s 2016 European Union presidency approaching, with French still a key working language among EU institutions.
French school moves to new site
THE FRENCH-SLOVAK school, which has existed since 2003, started the academic year 2014/2015 at a new location. L’école française de Bratislava moved from Cadrova street in Bratislava’s Kramáre borough into the reconstructed building of a former elementary school at Marie Curie Sklodowska Street in Petržalka.

Nourishing mutual relations
THE FRENCH-Slovak Chamber of Commerce (FSKO) was launched in 1994 and currently has more than 150 members. After the commercial department of the Slovak Embassy in France was cancelled in 2011 and because the commercial department of the French Embassy in Slovakia has not been providing commercial services for French companies as of January 2012, FSKO is the only institution serving these purposes on the bilateral level, Dušan Huszár of FSKO told The Slovak Spectator.
Cars and IT drive investments
SLOVAKIA is strong in the automotive and IT industries, uses the euro currency and has a qualified and still relatively cheap labour force. All these make Slovakia attractive for investors from the United States to launch or extend their business here.
Launch with aluminium foil
US AMBASSADOR to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick and his wife Kate launched the book of Slovak artist Robert Hromec titled “New Mixed-Media Paintings on Aluminum Plate” with cut foil. The book, issued by Cantor Art Press publishing house in New York, was introduced in Bratislava’s University Library on February 22.
The best diplomacy: travel, education exchange
THEODORE Sedgwick believes that for diplomats it is important to talk to the average person in order to better understand the country. “I really enjoyed my contact with so many Slovaks all over the country,” said Sedgwick, the US ambassador to Slovakia, who is serving his fourth year here as a diplomat. A passionate traveller himself, Sedgwick says Slovakia has much to offer as a tourist destination, and also as an important player in regional security.
US diplomat introduced his book about Slovakia
PAUL Hacker, the first US diplomat to serve in Slovakia after the Velvet Revolution, introduced the Slovak version of his book “Slovakia 1990-1993” in the University Library in Bratislava on April 28.
