Lesy SR, the state forestry enterprise, is set to expand Slovakia's outdoor experience with a new project to build tourist shelters across hiking trails. Scheduled for completion next spring, these shelters will be strategically located in seven picturesque spots across western, central, and eastern Slovakia, enhancing the country's network of hiking amenities.

Carefully chosen by experts familiar with the terrain and popular routes, these new refuges aim to offer a welcoming rest stop for nature enthusiasts exploring Slovakia's diverse landscapes.

"The selection took into account the proximity of hiking trails, as well as the possibility of obtaining the necessary permits, balancing property and legal conditions and accessibility, since it will be necessary to take care of the shelters," explained the company.

In the western part of Slovakia, the shelters are to be built near the village of Podhradie, Topoľčany district, and the village of Horná Ves, Prievidza district. When it comes to central Slovakia, one will be placed near Čierny Balog, another near Turie, and Hrochoť. In the east, hikers will find the shelters near Šindliar and near Vyšná Rybnica.

The shelters will be made of wood and have metal roofs. They will be equipped with a table, bench, bunk bed, sleeping area and wood stove. Hikers will also be able to use the shelter attic for overnight stays.

"The shelters will be accessible without restriction to everyone day or night, and will complement the existing network of shelters on marked trails in Slovakia," added the state enterprise.

The completion will depend on the conditions in the winter months and expected to be handed over in the spring of 2025.
