In the heart of Slovakia’s Slovak Paradise National Park, a winter wonderland awaits not only hikers and skiers but also enthusiasts of a more daring pastime: cold-water swimming. As the temperature drops, hardy adventurers flock to the region for an invigorating dip in nature’s icy embrace.
For beginners and seasoned enthusiasts alike, the Zelená lávka (Green Bridge) area offers an accessible yet picturesque spot, reports the SITA news agency. Located along the blue hiking trail from Smižianska Maša to Čingov, this stretch of the Hornád River boasts gentle currents and shallow banks, making it a favourite for locals and members of the Pstruhy Slovenského Raja winter swimming club.
“The calm waters here attract swimmers from across the region,” says the Slovenský Raj & Spiš Tourism Board.
For those seeking a more dramatic setting, the Palcmanská Maša reservoir near Dedinky offers a striking alternative. Its western edge by Stratenská Píla is particularly popular.
“There’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in icy water surrounded by the park’s stunning winter scenery,” adds the board.
According to Tomáš Dražil, director of the Slovak Paradise National Park Administration, these activities are officially permitted in designated areas, with Palcmanská Maša open year-round to visitors.
