Tourism agency trying to boost knowledge about the wooden church in Ruská Bystrá, a UNESCO site, through a project.
The project Karpatské klenoty UNESCO pre rok 2017 / Carpathian UNESCO Gems for 2017, Košice Región Turizmus – the regional tourism agency – is aimed at promoting the only wooden church that is part of the UNESCO heritage list and which is located in the Košice Region.
The Church of the Relics of St. Nicholas in Ruská Bystrá (in the Sobrance District) should also gain a better accessibility, the TASR newswire wrote.
The project offers a trained tourist guide to the church who is at the visitors’ disposal, as well as several notes about the church distributed about.
Currently, a wooden amphitheatre shall be built on the school premises near the village culture house. Every year, the village of Ruská Bystrá organises an event marking the anniversary of the inscription of the local church on the UNESCO list, and thus, a venue for this event is needed.
“We consider this project especially important for improving the services connected with tourism in the locality of this monument,” CEO of Košice Región Turizmus Lenka Vargová Jurková, told TASR. “This is the only wooden church constituting the inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which lies in the territory of the Košice Region.”
The church is located in a village on the area border with Zemplín. Close to it, there is another UNESCO monument, the Vihorlat Primeval Forest, which is a protected natural area.
The village is located on several cycling and hiking routes, and thus, building bicycle stands near the church is the next step, Vargová Jurková added. Also in the planning stages: creative workshops with the production of miniatures of the wooden temple and wood-carvings, as well as a deposit for bicycles. The total amount of the project is €8,150.
