Slovakia closes transport chapter, has five to go

SLOVAKIA has moved closer to becoming a European Union (EU) member by meeting legislative requirements in the transportation sector on April 22.While only five 'chapters' remain to be closed in the 29-section acquis communautaire, the EU's legislative roadmap to entry, the path to EU membership is still an uphill battle for Slovakia. The remaining areas are some of the most difficult for Slovakia, and some state officials believe that passing the required legislation by the mid-summer parliamentary recess before upcoming elections will be next to impossible.

Civil Code reform to spark new lending

BUSINESSES in the under-invested small- and medium-sized sector will be able to get loans far more easily under legislation recently approved by government.Changes to the Civil Code approved by ministers April 17 will allow businesses in the sector, seen as crucial to the future competitiveness of the Slovak economy in an enlarged European Union, to use movable assets as collateral on loans, while banks' positions as creditors will also be strengthened."This is a really important change and a big step forward. It's perfect legislation and will bring massive opportunities," said Vladimír Tvaroška, advisor to Deputy PM for the Economy Ivan Mikloš.

Looking away: Slovakia and the far-right

ONE THING that rarely gets written about the political far-right is how stupid it is, how bereft of creative ideas, how reliant on thick-necked cliches. Haven't we already digested the threat that Jews pose to 'our' money, immigrants to 'our' jobs, and Roma to everything else? Haven't we already plumbed the potential of these paltry apercus? The other thing you seldom see in print is how powerful the dissenting majority can be when it wields the power it has accumulated from years of debating fools.I first met this power as a fool myself, 18 years old and returning on a train with friends from a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game. A company had given out bars of soap at the match as a promotion, and I was using my bar to scribble rude graffiti on the back of the seat in front when a man behind me leaned forward and told me to stop.
