Dzurinda stands alone on pre-election promises
PRIME Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda has said he feels abandoned by his former Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK) party mates in defending some ambitious - and unfulfilled - promises the party made to voters before 1998 elections.Speaking in front of leading Slovak political, economic and social figures on May 9, Dzurinda admitted that several of the SDK's promises, including pledges to double the national average wage in four years and bring unemployment below 10 per cent, had been "too ambitious" to be met.
Top Pick: Seeing Bratislava by car
DO YOU know which buildings still carry the cannonballs that Napoleon's army fired on Bratislava in 1809? Do you know who lived there and what functions the buildings served? Did you know that the legendary Čumil (Peeper - the statue of a man peering out of a sewer) got his name because of his habit of peeping under women's skirts? You can now learn these and many other things about life in the Bratislava Old Town core from the Austro-Hungarian empire until today in a comfortable way. Instead of walking the sun-baked cobblestones of one of the largest pedestrian zones in Europe, there is an option - take a drive.
Hockey title marks birth of new generation
BRATISLAVA - THE ROAR that erupted from thousands of young Slovaks on the capital's main square following Slovakia's World Hockey Championship gold medal win May 11 was more than a celebration of a sports title - it was a statement of national identity."When I saw people's responses on SNP Square I realised that I was watching the modern Slovak nation being born," said Soňa Szomolányi, head of political science at Comenius University in Bratislava.Slovakia's dramatic 4-3 victory over silver medallists Russia on Peter Bondra's late goal touched off almost 24 hours of public jubilation around the country in a communal celebration not witnessed since the 1989 anti-Communist revolution.
Majstri sveta: In more ways than one
LIKE most of you, I am still in a daze. The events of the past few weeks, culminating with the dramatic Peter Bondra goal in the 58th minute of the World Ice Hockey Championship game against Russia, have left me speechless, drained, numb and utterly overjoyed. My sme majstri. We are the champions. That is today the well-deserved mantra of the entire Slovak nation, not just its players. I could go on and on about the feats of Bondra, Miro Šatan, Ziggy Pálffy, Ján Lašák and the rest of the hockey squad. But even the deft skills of these world-class - indeed, world champion - players cannot overshadow what took place among the Slovak citizenry. It was unparalleled positive unity.
