Stereotypes reflect unfairly on all of us
IT all started quite sublimely. Almost imperceptibly, by tiny allusions, remarks, comparisons. It used to be innocent: "Do not sit like a lazy Indian", "Look at them smoking like Turks", "If you don't behave yourself, a Gypsy will come and take you away."Even though I hadn't ever seen an Indian, I was deadly convinced he must be enormously lazy, the laziest creature in the world. If I had ever imagined a Turk, he reeked of tobacco and if I ever had to fear anybody, it was certainly a Gypsy with a large burlap bag with the darkest of darkness inside.
Arboretum shows world of trees
WHAT IS a word with nine letters for a botanical garden devoted to trees? Arboretum, from the Latin 'arbor' for tree, and if you have never been to one, Mlyňany is the perfect place to find out what they are all about. The arboretum is located close to the town of Zlaté Moravce, and is unique in Europe because it comprises not only trees from the old continent but from around the globe. On 67 hectares of land with more than 2,000 different tree species, as well as bushes and plants, the garden is very inviting for an excursion.
Government defends shifting tax breaks
RECENT legislative measures aimed at harmonising Slovak tax incentives with European Union (EU) norms should be beneficial to investment, say government representatives. The comments come after a period of uncertainty and confusion among investors as laws relating to tax holidays were amended in June to put new conditions on receiving state support, as well as having legal basis moved from the Income Tax Law to the State Aid Law.However, state representatives maintain the changes are a minor matter inevitable in adjusting Slovak legislation to EU entry requirements, and that such a step should have a positive long-term impact on Slovakia's investment environment.
