Embracing art in architecture
WINDOWS without frames and smooth, large, and clear one-piece panels characterise the minimalist tendencies perfected by Swiss architects, such as the world-renowned duo Herzog & de Meuron. The architects have significantly enriched their medium not only at home, but also abroad, one example being the new Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London.
Swiss investors go to western Slovakia
SKY Media Manufacturing and Glas Trösch could change the reserved investment approach of Swiss companies to Slovakia. At the end of last year both companies expressed their interest in opening new plants in Slovakia in forthcoming years.According to Rudolf Staub, the Swiss ambassador to Slovakia, Sky Media Manufacturing, which produces CDs and DVDs, should soon come to Slovakia.
Switzerland is little but it cares
THE HISTORY of Switzerland and Slovakia could not be more different, despite their geographic proximity. However, the countries have quite important things in common: Both are without significant natural resources and the citizens of both have a tendency for hard work, said Swiss Ambassador to Slovakia Rudolf Staub in an interview with The Slovak Spectator.The Slovak Spectator (TSS): Do you share the optimism of the international community, which often describes Slovakia as an investor's paradise?
Plebiscite support rises
JUST over a week ahead of the referendum on early elections, opinion polls have shown a growing will on the part of the electorate to participate in the April 3 popular vote, but observers see little chance that the required 50 percent will turn out.On March 22, the 10-day referendum campaign started with the opposition parties appealing to the public to go to the polls and cast their votes in favour of the early elections to give "a clear signal to politicians to start taking care of the people and stop stealing," says Robert Fico, the chairman of Smer, in the party's TV advertisement.

New media travels
THE THIRD annual international festival Multiplace, which focuses on the latest trends in using modern technology in art, starts this Monday, March 29. It will run until April 8 and, as the title suggests, can be seen in Bratislava, Trnava, and Žilina in Slovakia, and in the Czech Republic's capital, Prague.Apart from presenting contemporary computer art, the festival will also feature various creative uses of new media art.
Lecture on Seaman's work
RUDOLF Frieling, curator, scientist, and publicist from the prestigious German institution Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, will hold a lecture entitled Contextualising Bill Seaman: Historical and Current Questions in the Relationship towards Texts and Pictures, on March 31 at the Centre for Contemporary Art, in the Trnava synagogue.
Pro Helvetia to close up shop
THE SMALL but very efficient office of the Arts Council of Switzerland Pro Helvetia, situated in the building of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, supports projects aimed at presenting Swiss culture abroad and promoting cultural dialogue with the Visegrad Four (V4) countries.Bratislava is a part of a network of Pro Helvetia offices working in the V4 countries of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland.
Slovak culture loses five
MÁRIA Ďuríčková, the author famous among children for her twin characters Danka and Janka, died on March 15 at the age of 84 in Bratislava. Her poetry and prose works, written for children and youth, received prestigious awards and were translated into 20 other languages.Born in Zvolenská Slatina, Ďuríčková grew up close to her grandmother, a great storyteller. As a teacher, Ďuríčková worked in several places, including Bratislava. She wrote for the children's magazines Družba and Zornička.
A promise of security
ON MARCH 29, the accession documents of Slovakia's entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will be filed with the United States, and thus the country will become a full-fledged member of NATO.Prior to the official ceremony, NATO's Deputy Assistant Secretary General for External Relations, Jamie Shea, visited Slovakia to attend a conference entitled Towards a Wider Europe:
