Opera diva to open music fest

OPERA diva Edita Gruberova will open this year's Bratislavské hudobné slávnosti (Bratislava Music Festival - BHS) on September 14, nine days before the first notes of the festival's opening concert are heard, in a concert version of Gaetano Donizetti's Roberto Devereux. The earlier opening was scheduled to fit the star's crammed calendar, which gets tighter with each passing year.

Apollo brings light to capital city

THE MASSIVE traffic jams caused by the recent partial closure of Prístavný Bridge showed city officials just how desperate Bratislavans are for multiple ways to cross the Danube. On September 5, in the wee hours of the morning, residents got their wish when a city bus rolled onto the Apollo Bridge.

A COUPLE of years ago a campaign called "Every fifth woman" tried to increase public awareness about the existence of domestic violence. The campaign suggested that in Slovakia, every fifth woman is exposed to various forms of abuse at home.

State sends relief to US

SLOVAKIA will answer the United States' call for help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by delivering two truckloads of relief supplies to a collection facility in Europe. The facility will likely be an American military base in Germany.
