Gathering for freedom
TWO guards stationed outside the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Bratislava directed a motley crew to an adjoining congress hall the morning of February 23. Convened to kick off a special international conference on democracy, panelists and audience members ranged from freedom fighters from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) to career diplomats and leading experts from the US and Western Europe.

Brunovský gets longer run
BRATISLAVA City Gallery (GMB) as decided to prolong the retrospective of one of Slovakia's leading 20th century graphic artists and painters, Albín Brunovský, until March 6.
Bush offers road map
"MR PRESIDENT Bush, allow me to introduce you to my fellow countrymen, who came to this square to welcome you," Slovak Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda said, facing thousands of Slovaks who had come to Hviezdoslavovo square to hear the American president speak.

WE have already seen record snowfall in Slovakia and the snow just keeps coming. Donovaly, for example, is reporting 110 cms of snow. This week's forecast calls for continued cold weather with temperatures ranging from -15 to -3 Celsius in most mountain areas.
The many languages of art
ONCE the workday is through, adults eager to follow their artistic interests often face several limitations. Outside the typical folk-art offerings, few fine arts classes are offered to adults. While children can pick and choose from a wide range of media - from oil painting to watercolours to charcoal - adults in Slovakia are not so lucky.
