THE COMMUNISTS' "bloodless coup" on February 25, 1948 marked the beginning of more than four decades of hard-line Communist rule. It also paved the way for the creation of special military units designed to keep potential political "combatants" under control.
Ministry cracks down
SLOVAKIA'S new law on illegal employment, effective April 1, will be accompanied by a nationwide sweep of labour inspections. The two-week sweep, initiated by the Labour Ministry, is going by the name Vietor (The Wind).
Free market hits nerve
EUROPEAN Union leaders agreed that a directive liberalizing the European services market would be reshaped but not withdrawn. The decision is a setback for Germany and France, both of which wanted the directive dropped.
